In 2017, nearly 47 million Americans, or 1 in 5 adults, were dealing with a mental illness. Not only do these conditions make it difficult for individuals to lead productive, satisfying lives, it also can lead to substance abuse and addiction. Therefore, it makes sense to educate yourself about some of the more common mental health disorders. When you do so, you are in a better position to improve your mental health and help others who may be struggling. At First Step Center’s dual diagnosis treatment center in Arizona, we believe no one should be alone in facing mental health issues.
Common Mental Health Disorders
It was long thought character flaws caused mental disorders. However, we now know this belief to be false. Likewise, professionals and experts now know that addiction is a disease. Thus, when common mental health disorders meet with addiction, individuals find themselves at risk. Mental health disorders are sometimes called mental illnesses. However, some individuals bristle at the term ‘mental illness’ because it still carries a pejorative or negative meaning. Mental health has to do with the ways you think, feel, and behave. Therefore, mental health disorders are diseases that hinder healthy expressions in these areas. Among the common mental health disorders, you may be familiar with are:
- Anxiety disorders like panic attacks
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Eating disorders
- PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
While not an exhaustive list, these are frequently seen in individuals suffering from substance use disorder. Often, individuals will self-medicate when suffering from depression or PTSD. They do so not out of any malicious intent but to address the emotion and, often, physical pain they are in. Unfortunately, doing so will only give momentary or superficial relief. In fact, self-medicating with alcohol, drugs, or medications usually makes these common mental health disorders worse.
Treatment Programs and Therapies
This is why individuals with these conditions need professional treatment. Psychotherapy is a frequently used treatment. Also, at First Step Center, we provide depression treatment as well as an anxiety treatment program.
Because there is no single cause for a mental illness, we all must be aware of the factors which contribute to common mental health disorders. For example, while genetics and family history play a role, we should be on the lookout for other risk factors like:
- Abuse, either in childhood or in an intimate relationship
- Chemical imbalances in the brain
- A traumatic injury
- Use of alcohol or recreational drugs
- Social isolation
