When it comes to treating substance abuse and other mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, or insomnia, cranial electrotherapy stimulation offers a unique, non-chemical approach for providing relief and healing.
What is Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation?
Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is an FDA-approved type of therapy that uses a handheld therapeutic device to stimulate the cranium and brain. The electric current, applied to the earlobes or scalp, is less than 4 milliamps and not generally sensed by the person receiving the application.
A study published in the US National Library of Medicine found that CES has shown to be effective in treating:
- smoking cessation
- drug withdrawal symptoms
- general anxiety disorder
- some types of pain
How Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation Works
An average of 42-46 percent of the electrical current enters the brain when CES is applied, the majority of which is concentrated in the thalamus. Located just above the brain stem, the thalamus is responsible for relaying motor and sensory signals to the cerebral cortex.
For people suffering from withdrawals from opioids, CES is being studied as a nonchemical method for the detoxification process. While the data is still preliminary, the study did find instances where CES was more effective in dealing with symptoms than methadone.
In treatment of sleep, CES has been shown to increase the amount of time spent in deep sleep, which could eventually lead to a decrease in the need for prescription sleep medications.
CES for Substance Abuse Treatment
At First Step Center, clients are provided with cranial electrotherapy devices to be used throughout the duration of their stay in order to help them achieve a state of nonchemical-induced calm.
As a complimentary technology, CES benefits other aspects of treatment because it works to recalibrate the system. In this way, clients may enjoy a more restful sleep, a core component to emotional and psychiatric well-being, as well as reduce overall feelings of anxiety and depression.
In addition to offering cranial electrotherapy stimulation, First Step Center of Arizona provides individualized care for each client at its inpatient residential treatment center.
