Matt Klein

Originally from north central Colorado, Dr. Matthew Klein, D.O. serves as the Medical Director for First Step Center. Among his other contributions, Dr. Klein brings 10 years of experience working with treatment programs for both substance abuse and eating disorders to First Step Center.

Dr. Klein’s journey to working within the addiction treatment field began as an adolescent, when a strong passion for substance abuse and the power of recovery was instilled within him after having watched a family member suffer from addiction.

After graduating from medical school at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Klein
completed a residency and fellowship from the Maricopa Integrated System in Phoenix in adult, child, and adolescent psychiatry. Prior to medical school, Dr. Klein worked for years in a youth substance abuse treatment center. During this time, he gained a profound understanding of the significant role relationship restoration plays in successful recovery.

Meshelle Smith, RN

Originally from Ohio, Meshelle has worked in the medical industry since 2007, but her interest in becoming a nurse began much earlier and is deeply intertwined with personal traumas.

While living in Arizona, at 21, Meshelle had her first daughter, who was born with Angelman syndrome, a genetic condition that causes impairment for body and brain development. As someone who had never experienced any medical conditions growing up, Meshelle was devastated by the condition, but still had hope in providing her daughter with the best life possible.

In 1996, after moving back to Ohio, Meshelle was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This diagnosis came as a huge shock, as it was the first time she’d ever suffered from any condition. It was during her treatment that her interest in working within the medical industry grew.

After going into remission from cancer a year later, she lost her daughter, who passed away at 7 years old from a choking incident. It was then that Meshelle went back to college to become a nurse. While her personal history related to medical traumas has been ongoing, it has also been a source of inspiration and drive for helping others.

As a mother of two beautiful young women, Meshelle loves living in Arizona and is enthusiastic to serve First Step clients.
