A Multidisciplinary Addiction Treatment Staff
The addiction specialists at First Step Center form a multidisciplinary team of care experts committed to empowering clients with the tools they need to break free from the cycle of addiction. Through a system of integrated men’s substance abuse treatment programs, clients are assessed and treated for both addiction and mental health disorders. Originally from north central Colorado, Dr. Matthew Klein, D.O. serves as the Medical Director for First Step Center. Among his other contributions, Dr. Klein brings 10 years of experience working with treatment programs for both substance abuse and eating disorders to First Step Center.
Dr. Klein’s journey to working within the addiction treatment field began as an adolescent, when a strong passion for substance abuse and the power of recovery was instilled within him after having watched a family member suffer from addiction.
After graduating from medical school at the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Klein
completed a residency and fellowship from the Maricopa Integrated System in Phoenix in adult, child, and adolescent psychiatry. Prior to medical school, Dr. Klein worked for years in a youth substance abuse treatment center. During this time, he gained a profound understanding of the significant role relationship restoration plays in successful recovery.
Karisa received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology as well as her Master of Counseling from Arizona State University. She started her career working at a non-profit in Mesa, Arizona with the Seriously Mentally Ill (SMI) population where she quickly discovered her passion for working with individuals in crisis as well as in a traditional therapy setting. She worked as a crisis counselor in emergency departments, hospitals, jails and communities providing support and liaison services to those in immediate need.
While working in many different aspects of the mental health field, she continued to focus her education on trauma and its effects on the brain and body. She has worked with some of the nation’s top addiction and recovery experts and is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Somatic Experiencing, Pia Mellody’s PIT Model for codependency, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
She also has a certificate in traumatic stress studies and specializes in the areas of love addiction, attachment, substance use, sexual issues and family of origin issues. She continues to gain knowledge in traumatic stress studies and is working on her yoga teacher training.
As a mother of two beautiful daughters, Paige Laidig brings 19 years of experience to First Step Center, primarily as a registered nurse in the field of substance abuse. As an undergrad studying at Monroe, Paige excelled in her program and achieve the Excellence in Nursing Award for her graduating class. In 2003, she took a travel nurse position in Arizona, and has resided here since. After graduating from Grand Canyon University with her bachelor’s degree, Paige began working toward procuring a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing.
Helping those afflicted with mental health, substance use, or eating disorders is not just a job for Paige—it’s her passion. As someone who holds an intimate understanding of recovery and the devastating grip of addiction, both professionally and personally, Paige meets her clients with sincere compassion and dedication to encourage total well-being.
In addition to her career, Paige finds gratitude in her daily life watching her daughters thrive in many areas including dancing, singing, and acting, as well as taking time to practice spiritual, mental, and physical self-care. To those who know and work with Paige, it is her contagious smile and enthusiasm that makes her truly irreplaceable.
Diverse Staff, Diverse Treatment
When a man enters the First Step Center of Scottsdale, Arizona, he meets with licensed members of our specialty addiction treatment staff for a personalized assessment. Addiction specialists will then help to identify the specific traits that were created by or led to his addiction. The primary goal of this assessment is to determine the most effective treatment plan for each client in order to guarantee the highest rate of success in long-term recovery.
Our addiction-treatment staff will assess the following:
- Psychosocial assessment: used to gain a comprehensive understanding of a man’s life history and his relationships both socially and with himself
- Psychiatric evaluation: used to gain a comprehensive understanding of a man’s psychological and emotional well-being
- Psychological testing: used for understanding a man’s perspective and psychological patterns
- Medical-physical examination: used to evaluate a man’s physical health and overall well-being
- Nutritional assessment: used to evaluate nutritional health and knowledge
- Activity assessment: used to evaluate a man’s activity patterns and social health qualities of life
- Continuing Care Plan: used to create an effective plan after the completion of rehabilitation
